It all started with a tiny sketch, a little teddy bear with a ball gag in his mouth. The reaction that followed enticed me to explore this concept more. Eventually it all led up to this painting marathon that allowed me to bring more ideas to life! It was awesome watching people bond to my misfit characters. Much more than I could have guessed. My feeling is that they represent a naughty streak many of us keep as secrets while maintaining the appearance of innocence. I tried always to keep the misfits expressions confident, like myself, they are flawed but never forced, they have made their decisions and accept all consequences tied to those decisions. They take responsibilities for their actions! That’s what I believe people love about them! Now it’s time for happiness!

This show happens to have many “birdlike” influences, unintentional yet seemingly obvious at the same time. Birds represent flight and that’s a pretty handy quality to have. Imagine being able to remove yourself from danger or an uncomfortable conversation with the flap of a wing, just to drop in, or rise up onto a new scenario altogether! That’s why these aren’t birds of prey. These birds are peaceful, choosing to concentrate on the heavens above rather than the chaos below!

Pegasus? Unicorn? Zebras? Ok maybe the zebra is a stretch. But if I could combine these three animals from the real and the fantasy I think I could create the most mythical and fantastical race of creatures of all time! Or at least this particular time! At least for a few days for sure! I would give my creatures fantastic and cool abilities like being able to remember all your internet passwords or being able to understand how to use phone apps and such or understanding why most TV systems need 3 remotes with no less that 40 buttons on each! Oh how I would love such a creature in my life!

Somewhere in Japan there is the Harajuku district (I have visited it often thanks to the internet!), and on my many visits there (virtually) I learned that something amazing happens in Harajuku. Japanese teens dress in wild, colorful clothing (mostly home made)! It’s a wild explosion of youth, color, imagination and creativity! Everything from make-up, accessories, and fashion, to hair styling is molded, mixed and transformed into individualism! Individualism that has all but disappeared here in the states! Harajuku Kitty was painted free style; colors, shape and form were added as I went along! Some things worked, some didn’t, but the goal was never to have anything “work,” the goal was to explore the wrong road, to discover beauty in the awful mistakes! The goal is to reclaim individualism!
